Poor Bertie :-(
Charlie and Annie are both on Tramadol.... (Annabelle has no issues with constipation I can assure you), doesn't make either of them sleepy either.... but I know it can vary from bun to bun.
I really hope he is okay hun, hugs to you too x x

Re: Bertie poorly:-( Update 08.03????
Do you understand Bunny logic?
If so please explaine why some bun would not eat no matter what tempted with.
I get critical care ready in a syringe and he happily takes it from there, no problem.
Aha hoomin thinks cool, let's get the stuff on a dish for him to lick off, no ... he wouldnt take it. Messing about it all goes back into the syringe and he finishes 30 ml in one go over 3-5 minutes.

Re: Bertie poorly:-( Update 08.03????
I don't know Claudia. I would like to say that Bertie just wants to be pampered and be syringe fed but I don't believe that would be true for rabbits given their love of food. I can only guess that he is in discomfort somewhere. Maybe it is uncomfortable for him to lower his head to eat He may find taking food from a syringe easier as it is at head level rather than floor level.
I hope that your appointment at the vets today may help xx

Bertie. update 23.02 :-((
Hello my dear friends!c.bolduan wrote:Ok I open a new topic for this.
Bertie went to the vet as he was lethargic, not really eating but pooing ok, after his dental on Wednesday.
Checked through and a full set of bloods taken incl.E.C awaiting results early next week.
What we found today is
Temperature39.8
Blood sugar 14
Heart sounds ok
No gas or bloating found.
He is now on all sorts of drugs to cover the main possibilities.
Metacam to continue
Start nebuliser therapy
Fibroflex and metocloperamide as well as a course of Baytrill
Top up fluids orally and commence syringe feeding if not eating by tonight.
Phone vet tommorow for update and plan over the weekend.
I feel very tired today and worry a great deal about him.
I had a phone call from the Swindon vets regarding his CT results.
The sad news is that he has got 3 masses in his chest. Two in his lungs and one mediastinal.
These could be infections or neoplastic changes.
The only way to diagnose would be via ultrasound guided biopsies. Which would take up all of his insurance cover of £2000.00. After the treatments so far both both vets we stand at 1460.00.
I'm upset and don't know what to do.
If we do the biopsies all following treatment until September will have to be covered by myself and if it is cancer he will need to be pts anyway at one point.
He is brighter today and we have seen our vet Bob who listend to chest and tummy and said his breathing is better. So the antibiotics seem to have kicked in as well as the nebulisers. He managed some greens this morning and is interacting a bit more.
I just want him to spend whatever time is left in a good way here with us. If at any time I have to realise that his quality of life is disminished the vet will come home to us and he can be send to the bridge.
I might not make much sense an waffle on.
What would you do?

Re: Bertie poorly:-( Update 08.03????
Oh Claudia, I am so sorry that you have had such bad news Did the Swindon vets give an opinion on whether they felt they were tumours or infection?
I am not sure anything is to be gained by the biopsies because if they are tumours then treatment would not be an option I would imagine. I would also be concerned about having the procedure carried out given Bertie has breathing problems, He would need to be sedated, if not have a GA.
I would say that if Bertie is brighter and is responding to treatment and is not stressed by hands on care then I would take one day at a time and be guided by him. I have no doubt that he will be spoilt by you and that you will do what is best for Bertie.
I am just so sorry, I know how much Bertie means to you

Re: Bertie poorly:-( Update 08.03????
Thank you!
What is there to be said or done when you get those news. Deep inside I suspected it. Being a hoomin nurse sudden weight loss shortness of breat, exhaustion, not eating leads one way.
No it would not be in his interest to have another GA or sedation to establish what causes these circumstances as the treatment is symptomatic. Now come on palliative nurse get a grip.
Yes he will be spoiled for whatever he hasn't had in nearly five years being with me he can have it now. No restrictions. Anything bunny unhealthy? So be it. My aim is to keep him comfortable as long as he is ok with this. When the moment appears to send him to the bridge we will do so.
I will not attent to the course as
1 my rabbit sitter is going away over Easter
2 I will not leave my boy!
Maybe some one can suggest a virtual way of keeping up with us.
OH and me had a fall out on the phone earlier, I'm not patient or understanding at the moment towards humans that misbehave. So I told him to "get lost"
I m on my one for now.
Time to nebulise. See you later

Re: Bertie poorly:-( Update 08.03????
I have been thinking about you all afternoon Please give Bertie something bunny unhealthy from me.
As for the course I am sure there will be notes and I think there was even talk of a DVD so I promise you won't miss out. When the time is better for you I would love you to still come and stay, visit Jade and Amanda and maybe even a trip to Tuckerbunnies.
For now though I am thinking of you and Bertie and hope that he still has plenty of happy and loving time with you and Bubbles xx

Re: Bertie poorly:-( Update 08.03????
Something bunny unhealthy? He had a small boiled potatoe, would that count!
I went to pah after the vet, they have recently opened in Cirencester, and I thought it would save me a trip to Cheltenham the range. Less of the two evil. Gosh, can I recommend not to do this ! All treats obtained, plus some cat food. No cardboard castles available will have to hunt for one on the net. Leaving there £ 56.00. I guess is called retail threapy. Take estimates how much would it have been if I had taken Bubbles inside:lol:
Got all sorts of treats and necessaries plus alfalfa hay cubes. Whilst browsing, or searching for the castle, I remembered I read they are good to put weight on. Gave him one and he nibbled it down in less than two minutes.
When seeing the vet on Wednesday I will request some stronger painkillers, just in case. He seems bright enough. And the vet suggested something strange. You will find it in a new topic!

Bertie Update 28.02
Hello Hoppers,
Just to send an update on Bertie. All your vibes and good wishes are working!
It seems he has levelled out.. He has been quite bright over the last two days even playing with his rug which I haven't seen for weeks.
Maybe it is wishful thinking but possibly the masses see in the CT are infection and not cancerous ?
Obviously all medication and alternative treatments show some results and I have started to reduce the metacam slightly from 1 ml bd to 0.8 bd. this is to help his kidneys as well. All other treatment continue especially the nebuliser. He loves this mummy and me cuddle time.
I will phone the vet on Monday to discuss ongoing care and keep you folks posted.

Re: Bertie poorly:-( Update 08.03????
I do so hope it turns out well for Bertie.
I confess I haven't read all 10 pages of this but what's on this page is enough to tell me you need all the good wishes you can get.
I have been alone since 1994 when my father died (except for seven months in 2009 when I had Pete to lean on). It's great having a one to one relationship, or a "pack" type relationship with your animals until one becomes ill and there is that awful possibility that "you will have to decide".
My final year with Loll, where we were forever on the brink of that decision, was so stressful, even traumatic, that I'm still not able to do something like read how another is facing similar, or potentially similar things. The details wreck me.
But I do wish you all the best, both of you.
