Re: Eye problem.
I've had an ultrasound too, but mine was on my heart. I never even realised that they used them for hearts etc and they give really good results apparently so you should get some answers!

Re: Eye problem.
Haha yes she's the same, she doesn't really like us stroking or touching her at home however much we want to! Makes like difficult when we need to cut nails etc she did wriggle a bit at the vets today but generally she's better than Kobi who loves a fuss at home.
She doesn't seem in any pain and is acting as normal but it's still a worry. The vet said that they can do the ultrasound without anasthetic but if they do wriggle they may have to as they have to get the gel on or behind the eye
I was looking up eye problems online and found something called a retrobulbar abcess which develops in the eyesocket and pushes the eye outward.
She did check the teeth and said they were fine but apparently they have lots and some near the back can't be seen?!
Bless her, I'm just feeling pretty helpless at the mo

Re: Eye problem.
The molars can be really hard to see. I always make the vets check teeth at myxi time so the buns will be covered for everything under their insurance. But it is a waste of time, they can't really tell how close we are to Bruce's next dental. Not that his dentals are covered by the insurance as they cost about £5 less than the excess!

It could be glaucoma (sp?) but she doesnt seem in any pain so that was pushed aside, it could be a dental problem, if a tooth is pushing up and making the eye protude, or could be something behind the eye where she would have to have an ultrasound.
Has anyone put their rabbits through an ultrasound before? I'm not sure how safe that would be
We've booked to see the vet who is specialising in eyes next week, he wasn't there today, and in the meantime have been told to give her some metacam in case its some inflammatory.
Then we had to pay £20 for being even more concerned!
So none the wiser really , she's just let me give her a good ole stroke though, which she doesn't generally let us do!
Yes one of our bunnies 'Danny' had ultrasound`on Friday December 2005 (just looked it up) as the globe of his left eye at the time was very bulbous and he also had swelling around the eye itself. The ultrasound showed that he had something behind his eye which was putting pressure on the eye globe and pushing it forward. My vet at the time rang Francis Harcourt Brown in Harrogate for advice as they didn't know at this stage what it was.
Danny never seemed to appear in any pain with it but the eye looked horrendous as if it was going to fall out of the socket. At the time he was on Baytril injections and eye ointment. The ultrasound in 2005 cost us £40.
On January 4th 2006 we took Danny back to the vets for a check-up on his eye which was now very blood shot and he still had some swelling round the eye they decided to x-ray him the following day and the result....he had an abscess behind his eye and they drained the abscess. He was put on Penicillin injections.
Danny's eye seemed much better after they had drained the abscess, he had a check up again on January 9th 2006 and our vet was very pleased with him. His x-rays were sent off to Francis H. Brown for assessment. Danny was back at the vets on January 18th for a check up and the vet was again very pleased and Danny was taken off the penicillin injections, she said the abscess could come back.
On January 20th he had another ultrasound on his eye to see how it was and it was clear. The abscess never came back.

That's what Danny had a 'Retrobulbar abcess' I was trying to think of the name for it and couldn't

Re: Eye problem.
Wow thanks that's reassurred me more now
The vet just called to give me an estimate if she was to have an Ultrasound, Xray, Trionomatory(?) - where they check the pressure of the eye, and sedation, which could cost up to £400. She said I could just start with the Ultrasound and pressure to see if that shows any problems first but can make a decision after I have seen the specialist vet next week.
I just want to do what is best for her even if it will cost us a fortune! My little pudding is worth it, haven't told the other half yet though...!

I'd go for it as if it is a Retrobulber abscess it sounds as if it is in the early stages , an ultrasound should show that there is something behind the eye. With Danny his eye looked as if it was going to drop out as it was so bulbous compared to his other eye and we were told by our vet that there was a good chance he may lose the eye but luckily he didn't.
Good Luck and keep us posted as I am very interested to know what it is myself now xx

Re: Eye problem.
Thanks, yes I will keep you informed, I think I will be giving her some metacam like the vet suggested to see if that helps if there is any inflammation, and then hopefully the vet next week can give us more of an insight. It does seem to me that there is something pushing it forward though, although it doesn't look at the point of dropping out, just bulbous.
Last night it didn't look so bad and she had it kind of closed, but this morning it was open again whilst the other one was fully closed. The vet said it was questionable whether she has any sight in the eye, but she still moves the eyeball around.
They don't make a fuss though do they bless them

Danny still had sight in his eye it was so sad that we got him through all that and he ended up with a tumor in his tummy that couldn't be removed and he eventually died Bless him
Rabbits don't make a fuss at all, in the wild it would cost them their life they suffer in silence. That's why it's up to us to do all we can to make them better....if we can.
Sending her lots and lots of 'healing' Vibes xxxxxxx

Re: Eye problem.
Cookie went to see the specialist vet on Friday and although her eye was looking better and less bulgy the vet examined and said there was a problem and that there is pressure behind the eye and that to book her in for an ultrasound. He said it could be an abcess, tumour or a problem in her chest and that the fluid isn't draining correctly. He also tested her sight but he couldn't get an accurate reading as compared to the other eye they both responded the same.
She's having an ultrasound on Monday, and if nothing is found then she's having an xray. I really hope it's something that can be treated, she's been so relaxed and loving after getting her bunfriend back!

Yes that's what we were told at first that there was pressure behind the eye. Danny's eye was very bulbous by the time he had an x-ray, they should be able to know what it is with Ultrasound, we had x-rays first.
We have fingers and paws crossed for you here xx

Having been through this with Gloria, you are doing the very best for her and having ultrasound tests is a really good idea so you know what you are dealing with. Keep us updated as to progress please.

Re: Eye problem.
Thanks everyone, my boyfriend has taken a very reluctant Cookie to the vet with Kobi for support. And now all I can do is wait.
It was horrible this morning trying to get them in their carrier, they just did not want to go in i hope they weren't trying to tell me something

Re: Eye problem.
I've just had the call,
It could be a malignant or benign tumour Where it is is hard to reach and they can't tell for sure how easy surgery will be and if it will help.
If we leave it and it is benine she could go blind, if we leave it and it is milignant it could spread and be fatal.
They said she could have an MRI scan to tell for sure if it is benign or malignant, but either way surgery may be invasive and dangerous and could leave her blind anyway.
I don't know what to do for the best. If I can borrow the money for the MRI scan I want to do that but then how do I know if surgery will be best for her or not.
I can't lose her

Oh no I'm so sorry
I think I would have to sit down with the vet and find out what the operation entails first . It's such a hard decision to make.
